Our commitment
American Homes Online is committed to making this website usable by everyone, including people with disabilities. Accessible design is not a feature we added late — a housing search platform that excludes people is failing at its core purpose.
We work toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium, and we design with the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act in mind.
What we have built in
The following measures are implemented across this site, not just on selected pages:
- Semantic structure — proper landmark regions, a single logical heading hierarchy per page, and lists and tables marked up as such so screen readers can navigate them.
- Keyboard operability — every interactive control is reachable and operable by keyboard alone, in a logical order, with no keyboard traps.
- Visible focus indicators — a high-contrast focus ring on every link, button, form field and menu, never removed for aesthetic reasons.
- Skip navigation — a skip-to-content link as the first focusable element on every page.
- Text alternatives — descriptive alternative text for meaningful images, including property photographs, and empty alt attributes for purely decorative images.
- Color contrast — body text and interface components meet or exceed the 4.5:1 and 3:1 ratios required at Level AA, and we never use color alone to convey meaning.
- Accessible forms — every field has a programmatically associated label, required fields are indicated in text as well as visually, and validation errors are announced and described rather than signaled only by a red border.
- Reduced motion — all transitions and animations are disabled automatically when your system requests reduced motion.
- Resizable text — layouts use relative units and remain usable at 200% zoom and at 400% on a single-column view, without loss of content or horizontal scrolling.
- Accessible modals — dialogs trap focus appropriately, are labeled, close on the Escape key, and return focus to the element that opened them.
- Status messages — form results and dynamic result counts are announced to assistive technology through live regions.
- Responsive and orientation-agnostic — the site works in portrait and landscape at any viewport size without requiring a specific orientation.
How we test
Accessibility is checked as part of our release process rather than audited once a year.
- Automated checks against WCAG 2.1 AA success criteria on every page before release.
- Manual keyboard-only navigation of every page and every interactive component.
- Screen reader testing with NVDA on Windows and VoiceOver on macOS and iOS.
- Contrast verification on every color pair in the design system.
- Testing at 200% and 400% zoom, and with browser text-only enlargement.
- Periodic review by an independent accessibility consultant.
Known limitations
We would rather tell you where we fall short than claim perfection. As of the date at the top of this page:
- Third-party listing photographs — alternative text for photos supplied through MLS and brokerage feeds is generated from the property address and type rather than from a description of the image itself, because the source feeds do not include descriptive alt text. We are working with partners to improve this.
- Embedded third-party content — where a partner lender or advertiser supplies embedded content, we cannot guarantee it meets Level AA. We ask partners to conform and remove content that does not.
- Older documents — some archived PDF market reports were produced before our current standards and may not be fully tagged. We will supply an accessible version of any document on request.
- Interactive charts — payment composition charts convey information visually; an equivalent text breakdown is provided alongside every chart, but the chart itself is not independently navigable.
If something does not work for you
You should never be blocked from finding a home because of a technical barrier on our site. If any part of this site is not accessible to you, we will provide the same information and the same service through another channel, at no cost and without delay.
- Phone — (888) 555-0199. Our team can run searches, read listing details, complete forms and submit requests on your behalf.
- Email — accessibility@americanhomesonline.net
- Relay services — we accept calls placed through TRS and 711 relay, and through video relay services.
- Alternative formats — we will provide any page or document as accessible HTML, large print, or plain text on request.
Feedback and enforcement
We welcome specific reports — they are the fastest way for us to fix real problems. When you contact us, it helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, the assistive technology and browser you were using, and what happened instead.
Email accessibility@americanhomesonline.net or call (888) 555-0199. We acknowledge accessibility reports within 2 business days and aim to resolve confirmed barriers within 30 days, or sooner where the barrier prevents you from completing a task. If a fix will take longer, we will tell you why and give you a workaround in the meantime.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you may escalate to our Head of Consumer Advocacy at the postal address below, and you retain the right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice or with HUD under the Fair Housing Act.
